WORLD IN CRISIS
Lord Jesus, you expanded the concept of neighbor to include people who were conditioned to hate each other. We pray for all people on this earth who are our special responsibility under your great commission. May we whom you reconciled to God learn to be reconciled to one another and draw on the peace only you can give in our relationships with others. Aid those given responsibility to govern, protect and guide in human affairs to exercise their authority under a sense of obligation to the governed and not be trapped by the easy lies of demagoguery and hate mongering. Amen.

For the church
Triune Holy One, you make yourself known to us in promise, covenant, blessing and judgment as you choose us for your own people. You send us your Son and the Spirit. Keep us in sending mode, too. Shake us up when we become so accustomed to words and activities that we cease to hear your call to reach others through serving and speaking. Let us never settle for being religious since you make us evidence in word and action for your love which reaches to embrace others. Tear us loose from attachment to unnecessary objects, defective perspectives, and outmoded methods. Kindle healthy passion for you and other people and so as to burn away suspicions born of quarrels now as dead as those who contended one against the other. Build in us the stalwart humility of tolerance in matters small. Give us grit to stand for your kingdom against all that rebels, especially that which would oppose you within ourselves.

For the earth's resources
Creator, you have provided a wealth of natural resources as well as an intricate balance of all living creatures. May our gratefulness grow and stir us to careful attention to sharing and conserving. Sharpen our senses to perceive the difference between desires and needs. Show us the folly of greed which poisons the earth and brings suffering and death to millions and entombs us in piles of refuse.

DISASTER
Earthquake, wind, and fire were experienced by your servant Elijah. You chose to speak in a voice of gentle quietness. We pray for those ravaged by natural forces as well as those subjected to suffering by human intentions or oversights. Calm the chaos, we pray, that help arrive quickly. In the midst of devastation, grief, pain and civil disruption forge human bonds of compassion to carry on healing work as basic material survival needs are mobilized and delivered. Amen.
